A U.S. congressman faces a lawsuit for allegedly defaming a former associate of the Bidens, who asserts having personally met with President Joe Biden. The legal action was filed on April 22nd.
Tony Bobulinski, a military veteran, has filed a lawsuit against Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) regarding allegations that Bobulinski is a Russian or Chinese spy. Bobulinski claims that Raskin refused to retract these statements despite demands to do so.
Mr. Bobulinski collaborated with President Bidenโs son, Hunter Biden, and the president’s brother, James Biden, for several years. He informed the FBI and, more recently, members of Congress that he had met with President Biden.
Additionally, Bobulinski claimed that Hunter Biden would consult his father for approval and advice on business ventures. He also asserted that messages exchanged between himself and others suggested that President Biden, while serving as vice president, was involved in the family’s business dealings.
“Joe Biden was more than a participant in and beneficiary of his family’s business; he was an active, aware enabler who met with business associates such as myself to further the business, despite being buffered by a complex scheme to maintain plausible deniability,” Mr. Bobulinski testified in March.
Shortly afterward, Mr. Raskin appeared on MSNBC and asserted that Mr. Bobulinski, along with other witnesses who emerged during the U.S. House of Representatives impeachment inquiry against President Biden, may be either Chinese or Russian spies.
“And none of them has laid a glove on Joe Biden because he hasn’t done anything wrong,” Mr. Raskin said, adding later that “the only crimes we’ve identified are by their own witnesses.”
Mr. Raskin also posted a statement on social media platform X in which he called Mr. Bobulinski a “political pawn” of former President Donald Trump and said Mr. Bobulinski had been “unable to support his claims against President Biden with any evidence.”
Mr. Raskin has also accused Mr. Bobulinski of collaborating with President Trump’s campaign.
“Each of the statements is unequivocally false,” the new suit, filed in Maryland, states.
According to the filing, Mr. Bobulinski has covered his own legal expenses and has no association with President Trump’s campaign. The document also asserts that he has consistently told the truth about his interactions with the Biden family and has substantiated his claims with evidence such as emails and other messages.
Mr. Raskin “deliberately and maliciously made these statements, outside the scope of his employment, in an attempt to discredit Mr. Bobulinski’s testimony and to besmirch Mr. Bobulinski’s character,” according to the lawsuit. “It was a mistake for defendant to believe he was cloaked with immunity for his defamatory statements.”
According to the filing, the request to retract the statements was ignored.
A representative for Mr. Raskin, the leading Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, did not reply to a request for comment.
The suit seeks $20 million in damages.
Mr. Bobulinski has also recently filed defamation lawsuits against Jessica Tarlov, a Fox News host, and Rep. Daniel Goldman (D-N.Y.).
