A couple in Edinburgh, Scotland, who own a Tesla were absolutely stunned when they got hit with an enormous repair invoice of $20,698 from Elon Musk’s car company to fix their electric vehicle’s battery issues. Tesla attributed the problem to “water damage,” essentially rendering the high-tech car worthless.
According to a report from Edinburgh Live, Johnny Bacigalupo and Rob Hussey, Tesla owners in Edinburgh, Scotland, were hit with a staggering repair bill of approximately £17,374, which translates to $20,698.
Upon discovering their electric vehicle was nonfunctional and arranging for it to be towed to Tesla for repairs, the owners were presented with a substantial invoice for battery replacement. Tesla claimed that the battery had been “damaged due to water ingress.”
They were also informed that this water-related battery damage fell outside the coverage of Tesla’s 8-year warranty, adding to their woes.
“I honestly can’t believe that this has happened. When I first got the call I thought we would get a bill for £500 or £1,000,” Bacigalupo told reporters.
“When they said over 17 grand – it’s absolutely obscene. My heart missed a beat, honestly,” he added.
“After finally getting to speak to a manager, he told me it had water in it due to the fact the weather in Scotland has been so bad. That was the issue. They said it’s not necessarily my fault but it’s not Tesla’s to pay under warranty. He reminded me there was a yellow weather warning in some parts of Scotland,” The Tesla owner said.
The owners claimed the car was not submerged in water or placed into any other unusual circumstances. In fact, the couple drove to a restaurant in the rain with no problems, but the vehicle wouldn’t start when they left to go home.
The frustrated owner expressed, “I’ve been driving for 30 years and this is my most premium car to date and this is what it does when Edinburgh’s roads get puddles or a little wet!”
This incident raises concerns about the durability of Tesla batteries and the extent of the company’s warranty coverage.
The price for replacing Tesla vehicle batteries is notorious for its wide range, spanning from $5,000 to well over $20,000. This fluctuation in repair and replacement expenses introduces an element of uncertainty for Tesla owners, who could be caught off guard by substantial, unexpected bills.
