Shortly before he took his own life in his Manhattan jail cell, Jeffrey Epstein wrote a letter from behind bars to another high-profile individual, Larry Nassar, a notorious figure involved in the sexual abuse of young girls. However, the letter never reached its intended recipient.
This shocking revelation comes from a 4,000-page collection of documents obtained by the Associated Press. The documents offer an updated glimpse into Epstein’s declining mental health during his 36-day stay at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan.
Epstein’s unopened letter to Nassar, who has a history of sexually abusing young girls, was found in the mailroom weeks after Epstein’s suicide with a ‘return to sender’ notice. An investigator discovered the letter and expressed uncertainty about whether to open it or hand it over to someone else in an email to a prison official.
“It appeared he mailed it out and it was returned back to him,” the investigator who found the letter told a prison official by email. “I am not sure if I should open it or should we hand it over to anyone?”
Unfortunately, the contents of the letter were not among the documents provided to the Associated Press under the Freedom of Information Act.
The documents did, however, include a psychological reconstruction of Epstein’s death, shedding light on the convicted pedophile’s behavior leading up to his suicide on August 10, 2019.
Two weeks before his death, prison officials reported that the 66-year-old Epstein was sitting in the corner of his cell with a vacant expression, tormented by the constant sound of a broken toilet that wouldn’t stop running.
Epstein was booked at the federally run prison on July 6, 2019. Within just 22 hours of his arrival, he was removed from the general population “due to the significant increase in media coverage and awareness of his notoriety among the inmate population,” according to the psychological reconstruction of his death.
During his health screening, Epstein revealed that he had more than 10 female sexual partners within the last five years. Medical records indicated that he was suffering from sleep apnea, constipation, hypertension, lower back pain, and prediabetes. He had also been treated for chlamydia in the past.
Initially, Epstein seemed to try to adapt to prison life, signing up for a Kosher meal plan and requesting permission to exercise outside through his lawyer, as revealed in the documents.
Just two days before his suicide, he made a purchase of $73.85 worth of items from the prison commissary, including an AM/FM radio and headphones, according to jail records.
