Netflix Co-Founder Steps in With $2 Million Donation to Back Newsom’s Redistricting Effort

Democrat megadonors are pouring big money into Gavin Newsom’s redistricting campaign. Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings is the latest Democrat megadonor backing the redistricting campaign.

A new Politico report reveals Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings donated $2 million to Governor Newsom’s plan to redraw California’s congressional maps.

This isn’t the first time Hastings has financially backed Newsom.

In 2021, Hastings dropped $3 million to help Newsom defeat the recall attempt.

Here’s Politico on the latest $2 million donation:

Netflix co-founder and Democratic megadonor Reed Hastings has given $2 million to help California redraw its House maps in the latest indication of the campaign’s outsize stakes.

Hastings is a stalwart supporter of Democratic causes and an ally of Gov. Gavin Newsom, who has championed the push to counter Texas’ GOP gerrymander with a new map designed to oust California Republicans. He also spent $3 million to help Newsom beat back a recall attempt in 2021.

A Nov. 4 special election will give Californians an up-or-down vote on new House maps, drawn in concert with national Democrats, that would help Democrats flip a half-dozen seats in next year’s midterm elections as the party seeks to neutralize Texas’ new lines.

Enormous sums have already poured into both sides of a race that has thrust California into the epicenter of American politics. Labor unions, wealthy Californians and House Democrats’ super PAC have already contributed millions of dollars while an affluent independent redistricting advocate, Charles Munger, Jr., has dropped more than $10 million to defeat the measure.

Last year, Hastings gave $7 million to former Vice President Kamala Harris. This move led thousands of conservatives to cancel their Netflix subscriptions.
