New York City Judge Juan Merchan has ruled that the trial involving former President Trump and the Stormy Daniels hush money case, brought forth by Alvin Bragg, will kick off on March 25th.
Judge Merchan made the decision following a delay in the trial date for Jack Smith’s January 6 case. Additionally, he rejected requests from Trump’s legal team for a postponement.
“It is completely election interference to say ‘you are going to sit in this courtroom in Manhattan,'” Trump’s defense lawyer Todd Blanche stated.
Last April, Alvin Bragg filed indictments against Trump on 34 felony charges connected to the ‘hush payments’ he made to Stormy Daniels.
Trump faced allegations of paying ‘hush payments’ to adult film actress Stormy Daniels, also known as Stephanie Clifford, via his former attorney Michael Cohen. The payments were part of a scheme aimed at silencing Daniels and preventing the story of their purported affair from being published in the National Enquirer.
The payments to Stormy Daniels did not originate from Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign funds.
According to Trump’s attorney Joe Tacopina, the payments were processed using internal business records. Tacopina emphasized that no tax deduction was claimed, and there was no requirement to report it to the FEC.
Trump entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.
Trump faced a criminal charge for each payment he authorized to his former attorney Michael Cohen regarding the ‘hush payments’ made to two women.
Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg went through the Trump Organization’s financial records and brought charges against him for each payment made to Cohen.
All payments to Michael Cohen were made in 2017, during Trump’s presidency.
Bragg’s office applied the same charge 34 times, simply substituting the check or voucher number each time.
Alvin Bragg didn’t explain what exactly he wanted to convict Trump of in the charging documents.
Bragg informed reporters that he is not obligated to disclose the nature of the underlying felony.
