17-Year-Old Pregnant Girl Shot in Road Rage Incident, Baby Survives

A 17-year-old girl, in her third trimester of pregnancy, was gunned down in a road rage incident over the weekend in Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana.


According to the Tangipahoa Sheriff’s Department, Katelynn Strate was in a car with two others when another driver began tailgating their vehicle.

The other driver, 54-year-old Barry West, fired a shot that struck Katelynn Strate in the head.

Katelynn Strate delivered her baby at 27 weeks before being taken off life support. The baby is reportedly healthy and remains in the NICU.

“We are raising funds in memory of Katelynn Strate, age 17 who tragically lost her life in a road rage incident yesterday morning in Ponchatoula Louisiana while 27 weeks pregnant. Her baby survived, and we are now seeking help to cover funeral expenses for Katelynn, medical bills, and the essential baby items needed by her grandmother, who will now be caring for the baby. Any support you can offer is deeply appreciated,” the family said on a GoFundMe page.

Family members say Katelynn Strate is expected to be taken off of life support Monday, but her baby was delivered and is healthy.


The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said Strate was a passenger in a car with two other people around 9 a.m. Sunday when they encountered Barry West.

Deputies said West, 54, and the other driver were brake-checking and tailgating each other before West fired a shot and Strate was hit in the head.

When the driver of her vehicle realized what had happened, he drove her to a hospital immediately. Her baby was delivered at 27 weeks and is in an NICU. The family is asking for help covering funeral costs.
