Democrats Threaten in Anger After Wisconsin Judge’s Arrest: ‘We Will Rise Up Now!’

Democratic Senators erupted in anger Friday over news that the Trump administration had arrested a Wisconsin judge for aiding an illegal alien in evading arrest by ICE agents, helping him sneak out the back of her courtroom.

The facts of the case are clear and compelling, based on eyewitness accounts from court officers and federal agents. Yet, Democrats—who have most recently sided with MS-13 and Tren de Aragua illegal alien gang members—threw their support behind a judge accused of obstructing justice to protect illegal aliens.

Here’s what they had to say:

Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA): “The Trump admin has arrested a judge in Milwaukee. This is a red alert moment. We must all rise up against it.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY): “There are no kings in America. Trump and Bondi can’t just decide to arrest sitting judges at will and threaten judges into submission. This is a dangerous escalation, an attack on the separation of powers, and we will fight this with everything we have.”

Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI): “BREAKING: The Trump Administration has arrested a sitting Milwaukee judge. My statement below: In the United States, we have a system of checks and balances and separations of power for damn good reasons. The President’s administration arresting a sitting judge is a gravely serious and drastic move, and it threatens to breach those very separations of power. Make no mistake, we do not have kings in this country and we are a Democracy governed by laws that everyone must abide by. By relentlessly attacking the judicial system, flouting court orders, and arresting a sitting judge, this President is putting those basic Democratic values that Wisconsinites hold dear on the line. While details of this exact case remain minimal, this action fits into the deeply concerning pattern of this President’s lawless behavior and undermining courts and Congress’s checks on his power.”

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD): “This is what fascism looks like: Attorney General Bondi threatening judges she claims are not cooperating with Trump immigration policies and saying ‘we will come after you and we will prosecute you. We will find you.'”

Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN): “Understand what this is: If Kash Patel and Donald Trump don’t like a judge, they think they can arrest them. This is stunning — we must stand up to this blatant power grab. Republicans: How is this not a red line for you?”

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN): “This is not normal. The Administration’s arrest of a sitting judge in Wisconsin is a drastic move that threatens the rule of law. While we don’t have all the details, this is a grave step and undermines our system of checks and balances.”

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) who caucuses with the Democrats (source link):

This morning, President Trump directed the FBI to arrest trial court judge Hannah Dugan in Milwaukee. She is being charged with obstructing law enforcement, a federal crime.

Let’s be clear. Trump’s arrest of Judge Dugan in Milwaukee has nothing to do with immigration. It has everything to do with his moving this country toward authoritarianism. He is illegally usurping Congressional powers. He is suing media that he dislikes. He is attacking universities whose policies he disagrees with. He is intimidating major law firms who have opposed him. He is ignoring a 9-0 Supreme Court decision to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia back from El Salvador, where he was illegally sent. He is threatening to impeach judges who rule against him.

Trump’s latest attack on the judiciary and Judge Dugan is about one thing – unchecked power. He will attack and undermine any institution that stands in his way. Trump continues to demonstrate that he does not believe in the Constitution, the separation of powers, or the rule of law. He simply wants more and more power for himself. It is time for my colleagues in the Republican Party who believe in the Constitution to stand up to his growing authoritarianism.
