New York City Mayor Eric Adams is suggesting that the city’s government may soon pay New Yorkers who are willing to welcome and provide shelter to illegal aliens who arrive in the city daily.
Since last spring, over 72,000 border crossers and illegal aliens have made their way to New York City. Among them, a majority of 37,500 currently reside in the city’s shelter system, which includes hotel rooms, homeless shelters, and a previously used jail, all funded by local taxpayers.
On Monday, during the announcement that the city plans to accommodate approximately 1,000 individuals who crossed the border and illegal aliens in 50 churches and faith-based shelters, Adams revealed his plan for the city to pay New Yorkers who open up their homes to house migrants in the future.
”It is my vision to take the next step to this faith-based locales and then move to private residences,” Adams said.
”There are residents who are suffering right now because of economic challenges; they have spare rooms, they have locales, and if we can find a way… we can take that $4.2 billion, $4.3 billion maybe, now, that we potentially have to spend, and we can put it back into the pockets of everyday New Yorkers, everyday houses of worship instead of putting it in the pockets of corporations,” he added.
Adams stated that the continuous influx of illegal immigration to New York City, which burdens New Yorkers with a daily cost of approximately $5 million, “is not sustainable.”
Instead of stopping the influx, he suggested again that the federal government more quickly provide work permits to border crossers and illegal aliens.
”I don’t want anyone to believe that this is sustainable. We need work permits, we need a decompression strategy, we need real immigration reform,” Adams said.
